Perhaps the most influential in determining ① authenticity of souvenirs is the meanings that the tourists themselves assign to their merchandise through a process of attribution of meaning. For most people, 'buying a souvenir is an act of ② acquisition of an object perceived as authentic'. However, according to a study, the perception of the souvenir vendors was that tourists really do not care if the ③ structure is traditional or contrived. The study concludes it is obvious that tourists understand that artificial and non-destination-specific items (e.g. stone chess sets, brass cigarette lighters, etc.) are not part of the craft tradition of ④ local cultures, but rather such items are made specifically for tourists.
